The 3,000 km myth

For years, 3,000 km was the standard advice. Most modern vehicles no longer need it that often. Engine technology and oil quality have come a long way, and following outdated intervals can cost you money without adding much protection.

What most vehicles actually need

If you're running conventional oil, every 5,000 to 8,000 km is a reasonable range for most makes and models. If you're on full synthetic, you can often go 10,000 to 15,000 km depending on your vehicle and how you drive it. The best place to check is your owner's manual. Manufacturers specify intervals based on actual engine testing, not habit.

Driving conditions matter

Short trips around town are harder on oil than highway driving. If most of your driving is under 15 minutes at a time, your engine never fully warms up and moisture can build up in the oil faster. In that case, changing a little more often makes sense even with synthetic oil.

Don't ignore the oil life monitor

Most vehicles built after 2010 have an oil life monitor in the dash. It factors in your actual driving patterns and tells you when a change is due. It's not a gimmick. Pay attention to it.
